Curiosity Club

Arts + Science Workshops for Inquisitive Kids

The Curiosity Club designs experiences for elementary aged kids to delve into themed topics.  The theme is explored physically, imaginatively, and intellectually.  Every day involves activities to foster individual exploration and group collaborations.

Active Bodies + Engaged Minds = Happy Kids

Summer Camp 2020

Art + Science Camp for inquisitive kids ages 8-13
August 10-28, 2020
Mondays-Thursdays 1:00 - 4;00
$250 (more if you can, less if you can't)

Wow. 2020.  You are not making things easy.  We will make  the Curiosity Club work online this summer because we have always embraced adaptation and resilience.  The way we make it work this summer will be a new invention.  We will meet online to engage in collaborative activities and make movies. We will meet online to plan and share projects we will do offline.

The whole Curiosity Club will get together on a Zoom at 1:00 - 2:00 (ish,)  to interact, collaborate, play, and plan to set forth on an afternoon project.  We'd reconvene online at 3:00 to share what we'd done and leave by 4:00 knowing what independent or movie prep project we'd each work on independently the next morning.  There will be additional as needed/wanted individual or project partner Zooms and I'll be available for questions or if kids wanted to show me something.

Our theme will be exploring mythological stories and the science underlying them.  For example, if we were exploring Thor, we would explore a variety of thunder stories from around the world and learn about the science of thunder.

The Curiosity Club launched in 2011.   Take a look at prior Curiosity Club workshops. The main idea is to cultivate curiosity as an essential ingredient for a life-long love of learning. In everything we do, kids are encouraged to take initiative, given the freedom to investigate independently, and work together to collaboratively enhance compassion.

Founder and teaching artist Anita Evans has a master's degree from Erikson Institute in Early Childhood Education with a focus on Social-Emotional Learning.

Summer Camp 2019

Art + Science Camp for inquisitive kids ages 9-13
at the Prop Thtr : 3502 N. Elston, Chicago, IL
August 5-23, 2019
Mondays thru Fridays 9:00 - 3:00

Curiosity Club is a full day summer camp where kids delve into a theme, exploring physically, imaginatively and intellectually.

This summer our theme will be

REAL LIFE MAGICAL MUGGLES.

Explore the world of Harry Potter as an allegory for the ways real people stand up to evil. Create some real world magic (and movies!)

What can you do about the Draco Malfoy in your class? Do you know about people who have resisted/are resisting powerful evil forces in the real world? Practice being a magical human even if you are not a wizard or a witch!

The basic daily schedule begins with meditation and movement, leads to research and projects, breaks for lunch, evolves into peer led sharing games, connects to an art project, closes with release and reflection.

The session will culminate in a kid-hosted showing including a showing and screening of the movies they create.

Here's where I stop writing like I'm a website and start writing as me.
I'm Anita and I'm the creator and teacher of the Curiosity Club. This year's theme is quite different than any we've tackled in the past. I want to begin conversations with interested families as soon as your curiosity about attending this summer is piqued.

The unique nature of this summer means that to make it through the wall at platform 9 and 3/4
  1.  kids should already be familiar with the world of Harry Potter and have read at least one book in the series (hopefully more)
  2. families should be willing for kids to openly discuss historical and current events, even the scary ones

Since we'll be looking for people who defend against evil in real life, we'll have to encounter some of the awful parts of history and current events.  In talking about how friends help protect each other, we'll have to notice our vulnerabilities. SOUNDS LIKE A REAL BUMMER OF A SUMMER!

The point is, that the kids at Hogwarts were facing all of this AND they learned skills to combat it.  Their challenges, lessons, and accomplishments are the envy of every kid (and adult) who wishes an owl would fly through their chimney and bring their acceptance letter.  This summer we will learn about Magical Muggles (ordinary brave people who do magical things even though they're not wizards or witches), practice Defense Against the Dark Arts (meditation so we can be stronger in the face of challenges), we will learn how to cast spells (practice speaking words to stand up for yourself or others so you're prepared when you need to use them), and of course - play Quidditch (I have no idea exactly how we'll manage that but I have no doubt the kids will  develop playground-possible rules for the game.)  I'm sure we will also stir up a few potions, invent some new games, and manage quite a bit of mischief.

So, if you think your kid would be interested in being a part of the Curiosity Club this summer let's start talking about it now. I'm sure you have lots of questions and I'd love to meet you and your kid.  I create the structure of the program but I purposely design the specific content in collaboration with the kids.  This summer, in particular, it will be important that we meet before the start of the program.
